MATT FAGERSON (flanker)

Gregor Townsend can be ruthless as Fagerson has found out. On his debut against the USA, he dropped a high ball that led to an American try. He was taken off after 63 minutes. He was among the players sent home after the 30-29 loss and didn’t travel to Argentina. To take such drastic action against the 19-year-old was a bit strong by Townsend and you have to feel sorry for Fagerson. His confidence would be low enough after his mistake and even taking him to South America would have helped him rebuild it. Townsend thought otherwise and you have to wonder when the teenager will play for his country again.

LUKE HAMILTON (flanker)

The man who has signed for Edinburgh next season has not shown enough yet to suggest he can compete on a regular basis for the No7 jersey. Hamilton had to go off injured 49 minutes into his debut against New Zealand last November. He came off the bench in the 48-10 win over Canada but had to go off with a shoulder injury in the 30-29 loss to the USA, which made him unavailable for the match against Argentina. The former Leicester Tigers player may have what it takes at international level, but going off injured twice and coming off the bench in the win in Edmonton in his three caps has given him precious little time to prove it.

JAMES LANG (centre)

Lang was the surprise pick for Scotland’s summer tour. He lasted just 44 minutes of his Scotland debut against Canada before coming off with a head knock that kept him out of the USA game. Against Argentina, he came on with eight minutes left with the game well won by that stage. That was not time enough to show he has what it takes to make it at international level. First impressions suggest, though, he is not any better than any of the other centres Scotland have.
