Willo quits Pars after just NINE days at the club
IRISH midfielder Willo Flood has quit Dunfermline — just a week after joining. Released by Championship rivals Dundee United at the end of the season, the 33-year-old agreed a one-year contract at East End Park nine days ago. In a bizarre move, however, Flood has now taken advantage of a clause in his contract allowing him to leave the Fifers for a move abroad — and has accepted a lucrative offer from Indonesian outfit Bali United instead. It’s understood the former Celtic, Aberdeen, Middlesbrough and Cardiff City star had previously been exploring options overseas. And when no such move was forthcoming, he made the switch to the Pars. After his deal was swiftly terminated, Dunfermline manager Allan Johnston said: ‘We are obviously disappointed to lose a player of Willo’s experience, but he had a clause in his contract for a very short window to allow him to move abroad. ‘There is simply no point retaining an unhappy player at the club.’ Dunfermline have retained first option on Flood if he decides to make a swift return to Scottish football. ‘He has already proved to be a great professional,’ added Johnston. Yesterday, Flood thanked Pars chiefs for allowing him to leave and carry on his career overseas. ‘I would like to thank Allan and the club for their understanding in this matter, as I fully appreciate it leaves them in a very difficult and embarrassing position,’ he said. ‘This opportunity is just too good for me and my family to turn down. ‘I have only been in training for a week but I have really enjoyed my short time at East End Park and I genuinely wish the club every success this season.’
