WORLD OF PAIN

German reign is over

- MATT BARLOW reports from Kazan

Manuel neuer branded Germany’s flops as ‘pathetic’ and questioned their commitment as the reigning champions were dumped out of the World Cup in sensational style yesterday.

Two South Korea goals in added time sent Joachim low’s team packing in one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history and goalkeeper neuer did not hold back.

‘We deserved to be eliminated,’ he said. ‘We didn’t convince in any game. This was not the Germany we know. It was pathetic.

‘We lacked commitment. even if we had gone through, in the next round or the round afterwards, we’d have been knocked out.’

as the fall-out began in earnest, manager low also admitted they got precisely what they deserved in their 2-0 defeat in Kazan.

‘The disappointment of being eliminated is just

huge,’ said Low. ‘I’m shocked. It is historic. I am sure this will create some public uproar in Germany. ‘We stepped up the pressure to score that goal in the second half, but in terms of our morale we were dead. ‘We didn’t deserve to win it again. We didn’t deserve to reach the round of 16. ‘We were missing our ease of play. Our classiness, our dynamism was not there.’ South Korea boss Shin Tae-yong admitted the joy of toppling Germany was hard to savour as his own team crashed out. ‘I feel great but a bit empty,’ said Shin. ‘I feel a little ambivalent.’
