My fake tan makes me glow, says Joan, 85

- By Susie Coen TV and Radio Reporter

MOST people in their 80s have more pressing things to worry about than if their skin looks suitably bronzed.

But Dame Joan Bakewell, 85, has revealed she uses £3.80 fake tan to ensure she always has a sun-kissed glow.

The journalist who presented the BBC’s Late Night Line-up in the late 1960s said ageing has not resulted in her neglecting her appearance – she still wears daily make-up and exercises to fight the ‘midriff bulge’.

She claimed her ‘vanity hasn’t vanished with age’ as she revealed she still feels ‘nostalgia’ for the wolf whistles she received when she was younger. Speaking about growing older, she said: ‘Eyes develop fallen lids and bag beneath. Looking in the mirror becomes less a delight in the latest make-up styles and more a matter of stoic resignation.

‘You use make-up less as you grow older. Many give up entirely. On the whole, my friends and I agree appearance still matters.’

Discussing her beauty routine, the star told the Sunday Times Style magazine: ‘Skincare is Clarins, then base, powder, the very slightest wisp of blusher, no eyeshadow, mascara on the top lashes only. When it comes to fake tan, I’m wary of coming out all blotchy, but Dove Summer Glow works for me.’

The product, which can be bought for as little as £3.84 for a bottle, is a moisturiser which builds up a gradual tan as you apply it.

Consumers are advised to exfoliate the skin before use and to apply the product in circular motions.

Grandmother-of-six Dame Joan added: ‘Women’s self-criticism doesn’t decline with age, so that midriff bulge has to be tackled.

‘Posture reveals age, and I’ve been going to Pilates for the past 25 years.’
