RICHARD DeDOMENICI travels the world recreating famous film scenes; it’s a process he calls ‘reduxing’. He uses lightweight equipment, cheap props and passers-by, then puts the original soundtrack on to this new footage. It all sounds a bit daft, until you see the finished result. Antonia Quirke presents GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH: FILM (RADIO 4, 9AM, 9.30PM), following DeDomenici as he sets about reduxing a scene from Kes.

JOHN WEDDERBURN left Scotland for Jamaica, where he made a fortune from sugar. He returned with Joseph Knight, a slave he had bought and educated. Knight married a local girl, and asked for his freedom and back wages. When Wedderburn refused, Knight took him to court, arguing that slavery

was illegal in Scotland. May Sumbwanyambe’s

drama THE TRIAL OF JOSEPH KNIGHT (RADIO 4 (FM), 2.15PM) is based on these events.

JIM KERR’S first professional gig was at a Gorbals railwaymen’s union club — he and some friends were hired for a children’s Christmas party. They played Velvet Underground tracks, leaving most of the young audience in tears. The Simple Minds front man (pictured) recalls this incident in A LONG WALK WITH… (RADIO 2, 9PM) as he joins Janice Long in his home city.
