Should men and women at the BBC be paid the same?

-

WHAT are all the women at the BBC complaining about? Surely when they were offered a contract, the terms and conditions were acceptable or they would have turned down the job. It is no use crying foul now. RICHARD DAVIS, Middlesbrough.

I HAD expected the ridiculous salaries paid to men at the BBC to be reduced to the same as for women doing similar work. The fact the BBC has created a commercial arm to pay higher rates to some presenters should be welcomed, provided salaries are not funded by the Tv licence fee. PETER BROWN, Leicester.

GIVEN that the BBC long ago abandoned the Reith model of public service broadcasting, why not privatise it? Pampered, over-paid celebrities would quickly grasp their value as determined by the competitive market. I suspect quite a few would be disappointed by the outcome — but that’s showbusiness. JOHN HOLDEN, Pontypool, Gwent.

WHAT does Claudia Winkleman do to be the top-paid woman at the BBC, apart from acting the goat on Strictly? Y. LACEY, Rye, E. Sussex.

HOW can the BBC justify paying Tess Daly up to £399,999 for Strictly? That’s £200,000 more than each of the judges gets. Equality means equal pay for equal work, and the best person for the job. SHEILA HODGSON, Plymouth, Devon.

MOST people don’t care what BBC staff earn or what gender they are; what they do care about is the lack of good programmes. I can’t watch comedies featuring foul-mouthed lefties, the soaps are depressing and I can’t trust the news. MARY WIEDMAN, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

IF GARY Lineker, Chris Evans and Graham Norton got only a quarter of their BBC salary, they would still be overpaid. HELEN PENNEY, Longborough, Glos.
