Has Maggie statue found home at last?
A STATUE of Margaret Thatcher that was rejected for Parliament Square could be erected in her home town.
Westminster City Council turned down plans for a 10ft bronze earlier this year, claiming the area was already saturated with monuments.
And some voiced fears that a statue of the divisive leader could be targeted by hard-Left vandals.
But now council officials in Grantham, Lincolnshire, are considering proposals to take the statue, reported to have cost £300,000, of Britain’s first female Prime Minister.
The Public Memorials Appeal, a charity which commissions statues of public figures, has offered the statue to Grantham after failing to secure permission for it to be erected in London.
Grantham Community Heritage Association and South Kesteven District Council are working with the Public Memorials Appeal to draft outline terms of an agreement. Formal proposals are expected to be submitted before the end of the year.
Baroness Thatcher grew up in Grantham as the daughter of a grocer in the market town.
A South Kesteven District Council spokesman said members of the Thatcher family would be invited for an unveiling should the statue come to Grantham.
A Public Memorials Appeal spokesman said: ‘We are delighted to offer the statue to Grantham on behalf of the people that have donated towards its creation.
‘It is a stunning statue and I think it would be absolutely fitting for it to come to Grantham.’
