DEMI AND THE ‘DISNEY CURSE’
POP singer Demi Lovato is now in a stable condition after a suspected drug overdose.
The 25-year-old, who joins a string of former Disney stars to have suffered with substance abuse problems, was found unconscious at her £6million Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday.
Emergency services then transported her to a Los Angeles hospital. Miss Lovato was 18 when she first went to rehab, two years after her breakthrough role in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock.
The actress and singer has bipolar disorder and has struggled with bulimia, drug addiction and self-harm.
Early reports suggested she had suffered a heroin overdose and was revived by friends, but sources later claimed she had not taken heroin.
In March, she told fans she had celebrated the sixth anniversary of being sober battling an addiction to cocaine and the opioid painkiller OxyContin.
She wrote on Twitter: ‘Just officially turned six years sober. So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It is possible.’ But in a song released last month, called Sober, she opened up about a possible relapse. Miss Lovato performed the song at the California Mid-State fair at the weekend but reportedly forgot the words.
The lyrics state: ‘Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober any more. And Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilt on the floor.
‘To the ones who never left me, we’ve been down this road before. I’m so sorry, I’m not sober any more.’
The singer is now conscious and recovering at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center. A statement from her representative said: ‘Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers, and support.
‘Her health and recovery is the most important thing right now.’
Fellow music stars, including Justin Timberlake and Ariana Grande, have sent messages of support to Miss Lovato.
Singer Lady Gaga wrote on Twitter: ‘We should all wrap our arms of love around Demi Lovato. I am so happy you’re alive. Thank God.
‘We all wish you self-compassion and inner peace. And may you receive the love so many have for you.’
Miss Lovato was a child star who found fame on the TV series Barney And Friends before appearing in Camp Rock in 2008. She went on to become a multi-platinum pop star with hits such as Sorry Not Sorry, Skyscraper and Heart Attack.
