Rescued from paws of a cat, the budgie lost for 6 weeks

- By Alan Shields

WHEN Penny Campbell’s budgie disappeared from her conservatory, she never thought she would see the bird again.

But in a bizarre twist, Rosie Bloom was discovered six weeks later – in the paws of a cat who was using her as a plaything.

Incredibly, the budgie was snatched from the cat’s jaws and is back at home.

Rosie escaped from her owner’s home near Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, last month. Miss Campbell, 47, said: ‘My mum bought me budgies as a housewarming present.

‘I let them live wild in the conservatory. But I’d been not well and someone was looking after the house and a window was left open by mistake.’

Rosie Bloom seems to have thrived in the Aberdeenshire countryside but almost met a sticky end when she was captured by a cat named Bear in a garden a mile from where she was last seen.

Bear belongs to Professor Dame Sue Black, the renowned forensic anthropologist and academic, and her husband Tom.

Professor Black said: ‘He’s quite the little killer, he brings in mice and birds. My youngest daughter Anna and I were having lunch when we heard this almighty squawking. My daughter ran in and said, “You won’t believe this, it’s a blue budgie”. We charged into the kitchen and put it in the cat basket to take it to the vet.

‘It survived the wild birds and it survived our cat, so that budgie deserves to live.’

When Miss Campbell was reunited with her pet she said: ‘She’s flying around the conservatory again, looking good.’
