Hunt for £50k fivers etched with Harry Kane’s face
THREE £5 notes engraved with Harry Kane’s face have gone into circulation – and anyone who finds one could make £50,000.
Artist Graham Short used needles to etch the England striker’s face on six notes for the six goals Kane scored at the World Cup, making him the top scorer.
One was given to Kane himself, one to the FA, and Mr Short, a ‘micro-engraver’ from Birmingham, is spending the rest in each UK nation.
In Scotland, he used one note in the Elephant House in Edinburgh, the cafe where JK Rowling started Harry Potter.
Mr Short said: ‘I just liked the magical feeling of that.’
He spent the first Kane note in Meriden, a village between Cov- entry and Solihull. Mr Short said: ‘It’s a few miles from the M40 and M42, and so that note could travel in any direction.’
He also spent one in an offlicence in the birthplace of his father, Merthyr Tydfil in Wales.
‘It’s not a wealthy area and I’m hoping this note could help to change the life of someone who finds it,’ said Mr Short, who was behind a series of Jane Austenengraved fivers last year – valued at £50,000 each.
He added: ‘It’s just a bit of fun, but it also puts my art beyond the walls of a gallery. If people find this and sell it for a lot of money, I’ll be really pleased.’
The artist has yet to spend the Northern Ireland note.
