Police launch probe after ‘concealed’ baby’s body found in f lat

- By Courtney Bartlett

POLICE have launched an investigation after the body of a baby was found ‘concealed’ in a flat.

It is understood the child died several weeks ago and was discovered at the top-floor property in Dennistoun, in the East End of Glasgow, on Monday.

Police were called to the scene around 2.45pm and were still standing guard outside the flat in Ark Lane and a next-door storage room last night.

The death is being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination is to be carried out to establish how and when the baby died.

A woman is helping police with their inquiries but no arrests have been made.

Local residents reacted with shock at news of the discovery, saying the quiet street had been ‘awash’ with police vans all week.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: ‘We can’t believe what’s happening here. The place has seen police come and go all week.

‘I see the young girl who lives in the flat all the time as she goes about her day.

‘She’s pretty, bright, bubbly and has no children. I always thought she was a student.

‘We wish the police would tell us what is going on. We don’t even know if it’s safe to let our kids play outside.’

The neighbour also said the storage room next to the flat ‘was always open’ and full of ‘piles of junk’.

Another said: ‘The whole area has been awash with police since Monday.

‘It’s a complete mystery as to what happened. None of us have any idea.

‘But we knew something was up when they were still here late into the evening.

‘Then we were told that the baby had been found concealed, but after that nothing.’

The find follows the unrelated death of another baby from the Castlemilk area of the city earlier this week.

Detectives began an investigation after six-month-old Blake Smith died on Monday.

She was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after the alarm was raised when she fell ill at home. She died a short time later.

A police spokesman said: ‘Inquiries are continuing following the death of a six-month-old baby at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after they were found unwell in their home in Castlemilk on Monday.

‘A post-mortem examination will take place in due course. However, at this time, the death is being treated as unexplained.’

Lauren Berwick shared an album of baby pictures online with the comment: ‘Blake Smith, I love you the world wee baby girl.

‘I’ll treasure every minute I spent with you. I’ll never ever get my head around this, you never even had a chance to live your wee life, you were too good and precious for this horrible world.’

‘We don’t know if it’s safe for kids outside’
