Dry weather sinks Games
The final highland Games event of the season has been cancelled after the blistering summer delayed the local farmer’s lifesaving harvest.
Peter Campbell, who gives up land for the Invercharron Games at Bonar Bridge in Sutherland, said he needed to grow hay to feed his animals in winter. The grass has not yet grown enough to harvest.
Mr Campbell said: ‘We’re awfully sorry this has happened but something’s got to give.’
Sally Macintosh, secretary of Invercharron highland Games, said: ‘his crops are only around 60 per cent of where they should be and it’s either he feeds his animals or gives us the field.’
Dr Sam Gardner, acting director of WWF Scotland, said: ‘Scotland’s own very dry weather has started to bring home the reality of climate change.’
