Should we pay £2m for Eugenie’s wedding?

-

I DON’T think £2 million for security at Princess Eugenie’s wedding (Mail) is too much for taxpayers to pay. It’s not just to protect the bride, but her grandparents and senior royals, which is only right. ROSALIE DAUBNEY, Evesham, Worcs. PRINCE ANDREW should pay the full cost of security at his daughter’s wedding, not the public. For him not to do so is a disgrace and a misuse of public funds — particularly when ordinary people can’t be guaranteed any police presence when a crime has been committed. ALEX PRESCOTT, Lancaster. PRINCESS EUGENIE appears to be a lovely young woman and we all wish her a happy future with her new husband. Nevertheless, her wedding is a family affair, not a state occasion. The princess is a minor royal and has no appointed role to represent our country. If it is her wish to have a carriage ride through the streets of Windsor, her family should pay for the security. JEAN MORGAN, address supplied. WHY be so unpleasant about Princess Eugenie’s wedding plans? She’s not an actress from an American TV show — she’s a princess of the realm and her father is the son of our monarch. Her wedding should have all the pomp and ceremony for which this country is famous. I also think that the BBC’s decision not to cover the event in full as a live broadcast is a disgrace.

M. fIELD, Guildford, Surrey. IF AIR Miles Andy and free-loading Fergie want an extravaganza for their daughter’s wedding, then let them pay for the police security instead of taxpayers. P. PALOMBO, Old Amersham, Bucks. HOW many hip replacements would the £2 million to be spent on security at Princess Eugenie’s wedding pay for? Which is the better value? RAY H. DOVER, Ingatestone, Essex.
