Is it game over for Andy as he bows out of Cup?

- By Bart Dickson

IT IS the news tennis fans have been dreading – Sir Andy Murray will not be joining Britain’s Davis Cup team in Scotland next week.

Many now fear his decision signals the beginning of the end of the three-times Grand Slam winner’s career – and he will never again play on home turf.

Instead of joining his brother Jamie, 32, and the team in Glasgow, Sir Andy will continue his rehab after his hip surgery.

In a Facebook post, the 31year-old, from Dunblane, Perthshire, said he wanted ‘to apologise to the British Davis Cup team and all the fans’.

He added: ‘I have had some of the most memorable and special moments competing for my country. With this possibly being my last chance to compete in Scotland, I really wanted to be there with the team and found this decision emotionally quite challenging.

‘I didn’t want to just show up not ready to perform to a high enough standard and let my teammates and country down.

‘If I don’t get the chance to compete in Scotland again I just want to say thank you so much to all the fans... you created some incredible atmospheres.’

Dozens of fans responded with messages of support. Julie Mooney posted: ‘It’s been special for us Scots to watch... you may or may not get another chance but it’s been a blast.’ Shona Mulraney wrote: ‘You’ve given your heart, soul and body to tennis. it took a Scot to break the drought of British wins at Wimbledon.’
