Is Archbishop Welby right that the wealthy should pay more tax?
THE report recommending a shake-up of inheritance tax, commissioned by Archbishop Welby, makes no mention of the Church of England’s investments, its property portfolio and the vast sums spent maintaining churches and bishop’s palaces. Given the size of our national debt, I assume the archbishop has found Jeremy Corbyn’s magic money tree, or is the Church of England going to contribute its fair share? DAVID SPENCER, Bridge, Kent. WHILE Archbishop Welby talks a good game on fairness, the Church of England is not, as they say, short of a bob. Will he lead the Church to divest itself of its earthly treasures to encourage ‘the wealthy’ to also pay more? A. MENZIES, St Andrews, Fife.
POLITICS and religion are an explosive mix, as Archbishop Welby proves with his pronouncements on fairness. JACQUI SALTER, Glasgow.
WHEN Archbishop Welby becomes an MP, he can decide
how our country is governed. Until then he should keep his political views to himself and try to find out why so many people are giving up Christianity.
J. WREN, New Milton, Hants. AT least Archbishop Welby is not sitting back in silence but speaking out against inequality. Isn’t that what true churchmen are supposed to do? PAT ARTHUR, Glasgow. IT IS easy to give away taxpayers’ money, but is the Archbishop of Canterbury prepared to give £10,000 of his money to a 25-year-old? Mrs PAULINE PASMORE, Shepperton, Middlesex.
LET the archbishop lead by example and re-distribute his own wealth. What does a man of God need with money, especially when his living expenses are paid for. JOHN MICHAEL FIRTH, Flamborough, E. Yorks.
THE archbishop wants to help the poor. But he ignores the fact that if Britain stops giving billions to the EU to squander and redirects the overseas aid budget to poor people at home, there won’t be any need to soak the rich or bankrupt the economy.
MAURICE BLIGH, Sittingbourne, Kent.
IF WE have to pay more tax, we’ll end up putting less in church collection plates. JIM TRICKETT, Pontefract, W. Yorks.
THE archbishop should stick to religious matters. He should be encouraging people to go to church. KATHLEEN ROGERS, Christchurch, Dorset.
