YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some of the best on our article about the £1.2 billion sitting abandoned in Child Trust Funds:

I NEVER agreed with this scheme. Like all similar ones, there are those who used it for the right reasons and others who thought: ‘Good, free money’. D. B., Kendal.

I DON’T necessarily agree with the scheme being universal. However, as with all benefits, it’s often easier to give them to all than to work out who deserves it. L. A., London.

I PUT my child’s money in medium-risk stocks and it’s doing nicely, standing at £7,000. I add £100 for birthdays and at Christmas and £25 a month. T. L., Norwich.

A SUM of £2,000 will pay for just a few months at university nowadays. I’d say it’s laughable, but at least some children got it. Mine got nothing. B. B., Manchester.

I DON’T know about this. I can see people calling up claiming they can help my child recover this missing fortune. K. M., Portugal.

MY DAUGHTER was born in April 2010 and I invested her £250 with Nationwide. I’ve topped it up monthly ever since and I will make larger deposits on milestone birthdays. It was a great idea. S. P., Eastbourne.

THE Labour government brought in tuition fees. The money in Child Trust Funds was borrowed by the Government. Whether or not you have children, we are all paying it off. P. D., Bideford, Devon.

THE Child Trust Funds were a good idea. I put £15 per month into my daughter’s. I’m not sure I would have done that if the voucher scheme hadn’t been implemented. It definitely gets you into the habit of saving. Y. G., Yorkshire.
