NICOLA Sturgeon has been urged to remove the threat of a second independence referendum on the fourth anniversary of Scotland’s resounding vote to stay in the Union.

Britain’s main political parties have demanded that Scotland be allowed to move on from the ‘divisive’ campaign.

It comes as a business report published today warns that independence would cause turmoil eight times worse than a hard Brexit.

Liberal democrat leader Vince Cable said that the consequences of independence on top of Brexit would be ‘cata‘We

strophic’ for Scotland. Labour said ending the Union would cause huge levels of austerity, while the Tories said most voters want the uncertainty removed.

The Win-Win document, by the proUnion Scottish Business UK group (SBUK) sets out an economic case for Scotland remaining in the UK.

It warns that the SNP’s continued agitating for another divisive vote is putting off investment and states that the loss of the Union dividend, worth £10.3billion to Scotland, would be a ‘disaster’ for the country’s economy.

Robert Kilgour, founder of SBUK, said: don’t know how Brexit is going to play out and businesses are nervous.’

The warnings come four years to the day since Scots voted 55-45 in favour of staying in the UK. Miss Sturgeon is due to update MSPs on whether she will reignite her demand for a second independence referendum within weeks.

Sir Vince yesterday told the Scottish Daily Mail: ‘We have got a very fragile financial system heavily laden with debt and if you then superimposed the disruption of a breakaway, the potential consequences are catastrophic.’

Scottish Conservative chief whip Maurice Golden said: ‘The best anniversary present the SNP could give the people of Scotland would be to take the threat of another independence referendum off the table altogether.’

SNP Constitution Secretary Michael Russell has used the anniversary of the 2014 vote to claim that promises made to Scots have not been kept.
