McCALL VOWS AYR WILL GO FOR GOALS

- CALUM McCLURKIN

AYR UNITED boss Ian McCall insists he will not alter his side’s attacking style for tonight’s Betfred Cup quarter-final clash with Rangers at Ibrox. Ayr swept to the top of the Championship after a 2-0 win at Alloa on Saturday, with striker Lawrence Shankland scoring both goals. The 23-year-old already has 15 goals in 12 games this season and McCall vowed that the visitors will attack Steven Gerrard’s side. ‘Rangers are a different animal now under Steven Gerrard,’ admitted McCall. ‘But I won’t change the way we play. I’ll play with two strikers and have a go.’ Rangers drew 2-2 in Villarreal last Thursday before thumping St Johnstone 5-1 on Sunday. The Ibrox outfit have played in Spain, Russia, Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia already this season but McCall is more concerned about the fitness of his own players than the hosts’ taxing European schedule. ‘I don’t expect European adventures to affect Rangers — they’re pretty fit,’ added McCall. ‘My worry is my players will be tired next Saturday against Morton. At times, a midweek game can take it out of players but we will be wary of that.’ McCall knows Ayr have their work cut out to reach a first League Cup semifinal since 2012, when The Honest Men lost to Ayrshire rivals Kilmarnock 1-0 in extra-time. Rangers have not lost at home since Gerrard and assistant Gary McAllister arrived at the club and McCall reckons the duo have already weaved their magic in Glasgow. ‘They’re building Rangers a certain way,’ he added. ‘He has so much work to do but it looks like he’s the man to do it.’
