Can a change of shampoo soothe my scalp?

- by Inge van Lotringen

QI’M 70 and my scalp feels increasingly itchy and raw. My doctor gave me a lotion for it, but it doesn’t help. What can I do? MY MuM’s scalp got so sore she had bleeding patches — and nobody told her to change her shampoo, which made me really angry!

As you age, the cumulative drying effects of sulfate cleansers and alcohol in styling products can really damage your delicate scalp.

switching to a sulphate-free shampoo can actually fix your problem in weeks, just as it did for my mum.

Her personal favourite is Paul Mitchell Tea Tree scalp Care Anti-Thinning shampoo, £17.95. give it a try — along with a good scalp massage with essential fatty acid-rich oils to help hydrate and restore your skin.

For a treat, you may want to try The spirit Of Hemp Life Force Treatment at London’s Hari’s salon. Prices start from £80 for a 45-minute session (harissalon.com).

It consists of a scalp massage, gentle wash and blow-dry, and even a pot of hemp tea to sip. You also get some calming CBD oil, which is placed under your tongue (don’t worry, all of it is non-hallucinogenic!).

If your scalp problems persist, however, please see a dermatologist or a trichologist. For one near you, check trichologists.org.uk.
