Cheesewire killing: 50 new calls to detectives

- By Alan Shields

POLICE have received dozens of calls about the murder of a man 35 years ago following an appeal for help to finally catch his killer.

Taxi driver George ‘Dod’ Murdoch was killed by a mysterious passenger who garrotted him with a cheesewire then left him to die at the roadside.

No one has been arrested in connection with the death of the Aberdeen cab driver, described as a ‘gentle, likeable and kind-hearted’ person.

Police issued a renewed appeal for information last week and Detective Inspector Gary Winter, from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, said: ‘We have received a significant number of calls – around 50 – in relation to the appeal concern-

‘Violent nature of assault’

ing the murder of George Murdoch in 1983, and are still taking calls today.

‘Despite the passage of time, people still remember the tragic night George was murdered and want to help give his family the closure they deserve.’

He added: ‘We are looking to establish different uses for cheesewires at the time, an extremely unusual item for any person to have in their possession.

‘The route taken that night by the killer and the violent nature of the assault are also key features of the case.

‘Someone knows what happened to George and I hope our appeal, bravely supported by his family, has served as a reminder that it is never too late to come forward with information.’
