FRUSTRATED GALLACHER WILL TRY TO PUTT THINGS RIGHT NOW

- By JOHN GREECHAN

MESSRS Callaway, Ping, Taylor and Made look away. Because Stephen Gallacher is about to show your prized produce some serious disrespect. The ex-Ryder Cup star, who saw his chance of a second Alfred Dunhill Links Championship triumph blown away by the gales at St Andrews, has already booked a slot with his short-game guru to address the issues that held him back. And the solution might be as much about letting off steam as fixing any technical glitches in his putting stroke. Gallacher said: ‘I will go to see Phil Kenyon on Thursday, break a few putters, get something else out to putt with! It’s been a good week. But my putting has been horrendous. ‘I’ve had nine threeputts. I’ve played so much better than my score, so it’s really frustrating. ‘I’m hitting the ball good, probably as well as I have for years. I’m just not scoring. Even yesterday, six under could have been ten, because I had three three-putts. I’m out at two under today, which is six under for my last 27 holes — and I’ve left shots out there. ‘They come back to bite you. Then you hit a few bad ones and get penalised. ‘Everybody was going to drop shots in such conditions. I know what I need to do, if I want to keep getting into this position. I’ll be doing that the next few weeks.’ Gallacher (below) started the day just three off the lead but lost his way on the back nine, the Scot admitting: ‘I was six back at the turn so, no, I didn’t think I was still in it. When I hit in the bunker at ten, that was me. ‘You are still chasing it. But I made another couple of errors. ‘I was in two bunkers and had to play backwards. But that’s St Andrews, isn’t it? ‘Your game plan is to stay out of the bunkers. What club do you hit not to bring them into play? ‘Sometimes you have to bring them into play, hitting across fairways on the back nine. So they were all in play. It’s a great course in that wind.’
