It’ll make your hair curl! Dyson’s £450 tongs
THE £450 price tag is enough to make your hair stand on end.
But the latest offering from Sir James Dyson uses ground-breaking technology to curl it instead – with warm air alone.
The Dyson Airwrap hair tongs, launched today, follow the British inventor’s re-imagining of the vacuum cleaner, desk fan, hand dryer and hairdryer.
They use a high-speed jet of air which flows around the surface of the tong. The company claims this achieves a better curling effect and also reduces the risk of heat damage to the hair of more conventional tongs, which work by wrapping hair around a hot central bar. The tongs utilise the Coanda effect found in Dyson’s bladeless desk fan and hairdryer.
An area of high pressure is created at the top of the styling barrel which forces jets of air from six slots around the barrel – encouraging the hair to curl around it.
A clever switching mechanism directs airflow so that no matter which way you brush, the air flows in the direction of the hair.
The Airwrap has been six years and £24million in the making and went through 642 prototypes. It is available online and at Dyson stores today priced from £399.99 to £449.99.

Dyson’s bagless vacuum cleaner was launched in 1993 and has sold millions. It was followed by the AirBlade hand dryer, the Air Multiplier fan and the Supersonic hairdryer.
