McIntyre given Dens job a day after McCann axe

- By MARK WILSON

DUNDEE last night confirmed Jim McIntyre as their new manager — just 24 hours after axing Neil McCann.

McIntyre has signed a one-year rolling contract at Dens Park to return to football 13 months after being sacked by Ross County, for whom he won the League Cup in 2016.

A former player with city rivals United, the 46-year-old will begin the task of trying to lift Dundee off the foot of the Premiership in Saturday’s visit to face highflying Livingston.

Dens managing director John Nelms moved swiftly to finalise a replacement for McCann, who was dismissed on Tuesday after a run of just one win in eight matches and following talks about bringing in a more experienced figure to assist him.

McIntyre (right) will be unveiled to the media at lunchtime today, with a Dundee statement last night insisting

the club was ‘delighted’ with the appointment. Talks are continuing over the possibility of McIntyre being joined by his long-term assistant Billy Dodds. Dundee striker Kenny Miller admitted he had anticipated a swift replacement for McCann, given the sacking occurred at the end of an international break. He also insisted McIntyre will inherit a dressing room determined to put right their poor form. ‘I thought there had potentially been plans in place with the timing of the decision,’ said Miller, who moved to Dens Park in August after a seven-week spell as Livingston player-manager. ‘It’s no surprise there has been a prompt appointment. We have a huge game on Saturday against Livingston and what Jim will find is that we have a fully committed dressing room. ‘Any manager has to come in and hit the ground running. If you don’t, you are going to fall under pressure. Whoever came in was going to get a good group of players that just needs a wee lift in terms of confidence. There’s no doubt in my mind we’ll turn the corner.’ Miller spoke of his disappointment to learn of McCann’s dismissal, saying: ‘The lads were a bit stunned. The results have not been up to scratch but we were fully behind him. It was disappointing for me because I have only been up there a month and the manager was a big part of it. ‘But seven losses out of eight games isn’t good enough.’
