Vince in a spin after another foolish EU-turn

- Andrew Pierce

Bristling with moral fervour at the ‘People’s Vote’ march for a second Brexit referendum was keynote speaker and liberal Democrat leader sir Vince Cable.

Cable told the cheering crowd as he demanded another national vote: ‘there is no deal better than the one we have now: it is better for Britain and better for Europe.’

this is the same Vince Cable who last year, having lost his Commons seat in 2015, only to regain it at the snap 2017 general election, said: ‘it would be disre-spectful to voters and politically counter-productive to call for a second referendum on the EU.’

But then he’s got form for U-turns when it comes to the EU. After he was re-elected as MP for twickenham last spring, he said: ‘i specifically support the aims of the single market and its four freedoms: free movement of goods, capital, services and labour.’

Compare this with what he told the new statesman a few months earlier about the critical issue of free move-ment of people within the EU:

‘there is no great argument of liberal principle for free EU movement; the economics is debat-able; and the politics is conclusively hostile.’ What a beacon of principle he is!
