OCTOBER 30, 1961 A COnFEREnCE attended by 37 people in warm, winter clothing decided yesterday: nudism is OUT, naturism is In. An official of the British Sun Bathing Associatio­n explained: ‘We want to avoid being connected with strip-tease shows. The term “naturism” conveys a much better idea of sun and sea-bathing.’ OCTOBER 30, 1968 THE ROLLInG STOnES have lost their fight to keep a photograph of a lavatory wall on the sleeve of their new LP. Their dispute with Britain’s Decca Records and America’s London Records has held up the LP Beggar’s Banquet, due to have been released on July 26, Mick Jagger’s 25th birthday. Jagger said: ‘I don’t find it at all offensive. Decca has put out a sleeve showing an atom bomb exploding. I find that more upsetting.’

EILEEn ASH, 107. The oldest living Test cricketer, Ash was a bowler and batswoman for the England ladies’ team in the Thirties and Forties, having spent 11 years as an MI6 spy. She received a signed bat when she met Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, and still keeps it next to her bed ‘in case of burglars’. Last year, aged 105, she appeared on ITV’s 100-Year-Old Driving School and was told she was safe to stay on the road. IVAnkA TRUMP, 37. The US President’s eldest daughter was a fashion designer before becoming her father’s ‘senior advisor’. She said: ‘In Czech, Ivanka is the baby name for Ivana, like Bobby is to Robert.’ In 2007, she donated more than £800 to Hillary Clinton’s campaign to run to be the Democratic Presidenti­al candidate.

AnnA WInG (1914-2013). The actress played cantankero­us matriarch Lou Beale in EastEnders from its launch in 1985. She was a real-life Cockney and the soap’s main street, Albert Square, was named after her father. Wing once worked as an artist’s model and boasted: ‘I had a very attractive body, a Renoir, and they were mad about it.’ CHARLES ATLAS (1892-1972). The American bodybuilde­r, known for his 17in biceps and leopard-print pants, was born Angelo Siciliano in Italy. He chose his new surname after seeing a statue of the Greek god Atlas at new York’s Coney Island.
