...but Uncle Barry left fuming at Ferguson

- By GEORGE GRANT

BARRy FeRGuSoN has admitted he wasn’t happy to see his nephew, Lewis, grab the winner for Aberdeen against his former club Rangers on Sunday — and joked he would have to give him a ‘clip round the ear’ after his Betfred Cup heroics. The Dons youngster returned to haunt the club who rejected him as a 14-year-old at Hampden, booking a final showdown with Celtic with the game’s only goal. It was an ironic turn of events, with the 19-year-old the son of former Rangers midfielder Derek — and, of course, nephew to ex-Ibrox skipper Barry (right). And his uncle, at least, wasn’t too pleased after watching Steven Gerrard’s men crash out. ‘Am I happy?’ said Barry to PLZ Soccer last night. ‘No, I’ll be honest. I didn’t know what to do when I saw him win that header and it go in the back of the net. ‘I wanted Rangers to win but as the game went on I thought to myself I had a sneaky feeling this might happen. ‘It was a great header, he was aggressive and he wanted to win it more than the Rangers players. ‘At the end of the day, it’s disappointing for me. ‘Rangers have got to get to finals if they want to be made out as a good team. ‘It was disappointing. I thought the quality again in the final third was poor. ‘I thought Aberdeen were poor but, defensively, they were great and Rangers couldn’t cut them open. ‘That final ball, whether it was a free-kick or getting to the byeline, it just wasn’t happening.’ In the end, Ferguson admitted the Dons merited their victory. He continued: ‘When Aberdeen scored the goal through Lewis they did deserve to win it because Rangers didn’t bother them. ‘Before the game I said I wanted Rangers to win and Lewis to have a good game. He is family and I want him to have a long and successful career. ‘It’s good for Lewis in a way because he was rejected from Rangers as a 14-year-old boy. ‘He was told he wasn’t good enough to become a Rangers player and he went to Hamilton. ‘To be fair to him he dug in and he worked hard and he’s got a lot to thank Hamilton for because they gave him an opportunity. ‘Since Derek (McInnes) signed him at Aberdeen he’s become a regular and he’s doing the business but when I see him I will give him a clip round the ear.’
