New chapter led to Carol’s success
CAROL BROWNE started working as a part-time freelance proofreader eight years ago after completing an online course.
The 64-year-old from Peakirk, in Peterborough, had enrolled on a proofreading and copy editing programme with the Writers Bureau. Carol, who used to be a selfemployed housekeeper, found it ‘invaluable’ for her fledging business and writing career.
Her non-fiction novella, Being Krystyna: A Story Of Survival in WW2, was published by Dilliebooks in the UK in November 2016.
And, in October 2017, The Exile Of Elindel, book one of her fantasy trilogy The Elwardain Chronicles, was published by Burning Willow Press.
The second instalment, Gateway To Elvendom, was published last week, with the third scheduled for December 2019.
Carol says: ‘The course was far more useful than I expected. Although my knowledge of the English language was good, there was still much to learn to be fully proficient.’ Carol’s publisher is based in the U.S., so she is thankful for the American and British English section of the Writers Bureau course.
Carol adds: ‘Authors must always use the “Track Changes” function in Word when they work with their editor to improve a manuscript.’
She says the knowledge gained from the course helped her to edit and proofread her books.
Meanwhile, she still works as a part-time proofreader, with a small band of regular clients.
‘I have helped them with assignments, CVs and job applications,’ says Carol.
