NOVEMBER 16, 1956 MORE than 1,500 screaming teenagers queued outside Broadway’s Paramount Theatre today for the premiere of Elvis Presley’s first film, Love Me Tender. Many had started queuing for admission at 8.30 last night and slept on the pavement.

SIr oSWALD MoSLEy (1896-1980). The founder of the British Union of Fascists served as an MP first for the Conservati­ves, then as an Independen­t, and finally for Labour. Two days after the ‘Battle of Cable Street’ — when thousands of Londoners stopped his Blackshirt­s marching through the East End — he married Diana Mitford at the home of Nazi propaganda chief Joseph goebbels, with Adolf Hitler as special guest. CHArLES ‘DAWS’ BUTLEr (1916-1988). The American actor provided the voices of dozens of cartoon characters, including yogi Bear (right), Huckleberr­y Hound, Quick Draw Mcgraw and Barney rubble in The Flintstone­s. Butler started out competing in amateur competitio­ns, performing impersonat­ions of President Franklin roosevelt, singer rudy Vallee and a car starting up.
