Down Under inspiration for top home
Hi-tech Glasgow property offers luxury modern family living, writes Paul Drury
DESIGNED with Bondi Beach in mind, this bonzer modern residence fetched up at the end of a rather windswept Scottish golf course instead. Owner Linda Laws had enjoyed the good life Down Under for almost a decade and had warmed to the outdoor family barbie culture of New South Wales.
But with burgeoning business interests in the Old and New Worlds, she wanted her family to have a European base.
Now, however, although the grout is barely dry on their dream home in Glasgow, called TragerHaus, they are reluctantly putting it up for sale.
‘We spend most of our time in Sydney,’ said mother-of-two Mrs Laws. ‘But my son Joshua plays for Fortuna Dusseldorf in Germany and my daughter Georgia lives in Surrey. We wanted this to be our European base – but the reality of all that travel has proved too exhausting. We are not going to enjoy it, constantly dragging a suitcase.’
The house in the Whitecraigs area offers a luxury master bedroom suite, with the sleeping area located up a short flight of stairs, and a roomy lounge with huge windows overlooking the 12th hole of Cathcart Castle Golf Club.
The golfers are sufficiently friendly that they give the owners the occasional wave in passing – and perhaps in asking for their golf balls back.
TragerHaus is a triumph of engineering. Its footprint was limited, tucked into a hillside leading down to a railway line.
As a result, it is an upside down house, where you enter on the top floor of four storeys and work your way down to the open-plan living area and ground floor bedrooms. No expense has been spared in fitting out the five-bedroom property and its bathrooms, kitchens and sauna.
The exterior is wrapped in Caithness stone and Siberian larch cladding. The stunning Allmilmo kitchen has appliances by Gaggenau, a free-standing wine cooler and a Teppanyaki hob.
Bathrooms were supplied by Victor Paris, including a Victoria and Albert Barcelona bath. Mixer taps are by Hansgrohe Axor.
Sales agent Mark Jamieson is clearly thrilled to be given the opportunity to bring TragerHaus to the market.
He said: ‘This house challenges traditional thought in so many ways. It literally defies convention. The architects have done an amazing job, making the home work so dramatically on a slope in a tricky landscape.’
There is underfloor heating throughout, powered by a plant room that also controls the Lutron lighting system and Sonos sound system in every room.
Finally, there’s one lovely touch which offers a nod to the building’s Antipodean inspiration – a colourful surf board above one of the beds.
