CHARLIE ADAM will never forget the day he came across a global superstar wandering aimlessly around his housing scheme in Dundee as a kid — and will never get over the fact he later went on to work with him as part of a multimillion pound squad of stars at Rangers. The Stoke City midfielder is thrilled by the news former Argentina striker Claudio Caniggia (right) is returning to Scotland later this month for a couple of nights in his honour and plans to head back across the border to catch up. The pair became close during their time together at Ibrox, but Adam still smiles most over their first encounter when he was a 14-year-old Dundee fan kicking around the streets with his pals and stunned by his club’s incredible new signing sauntering around his neighbourhood. ‘I was growing up in Fintry and playing with my mates one day,’ he recalled. ‘We were kicking a ball around the streets and saw this man walking around on his own. ‘We got closer and closer to him, but he spoke no English whatsoever. ‘I don’t even know how he ended up there, but he was in the street. ‘I ran to my auntie’s house to grab a piece of paper and got his autograph, I still have it. It’s in my mum’s house, with all my memorabilia. It was surreal. I think he was just out walking around and got lost. ‘You wouldn’t want to walk around Fintry in the dark, it was quite a rough area. ‘Mind you, I was privileged to have the background I had there. I loved being there. ‘Seeing him sign for Rangers when I was there was incredible. ‘He didn’t remember me. He still didn’t speak English then. ‘I never mentioned that day in Fintry. ‘He loved drinking coffee and had the odd fag now and then too, but he was a top athlete and a wonderful talent. ‘Seeing how he applied himself when he was 34 or 35 at Rangers was terrific. He was still as good as anybody in the club. I’m looking forward to hearing his stories.’
