5 GLORY NIGHTS AT HAMPDEN

-

ALEX McLEISH has demanded the Tartan Army pack out Hampden tonight and roar Scotland on to a famous win at Hampden that would see them top their group. Here’s five other celebrated Scotland wins at Hampden.

1. SCOTLAND 1 ITALY 0 (1965)

Jock Stein’s men were watched by 100,000, who had to wait until the last minute before John Greig finally outdid Italy’s Catennacio system, which saw them defend for most of the game and grab a famous win.

2. SCOTLAND 2 CZECHOSLOVAKIA 1 (1973)

Scotland needed to win to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years, but went a goal down in front of 96,000. But big Jim Holton equalised and a young Joe Jordan (above) sent the nation into ecstasy with a late diving header.

3. SCOTLAND 3 SPAIN 1 (1984)

A Kenny Dalglish masterclass as he nets a truly superb goal to sink the Spaniards. A double from Mo Johnston before the break has the Scots in control and Dalglish makes it safe with a late strike as the Scots edged closer to Mexico.

4. SCOTLAND 1 HOLLAND 0 (2003)

Berti Vogts sent out a young Scottish team and Darren Fletcher and James McFadden (above) linked up for the latter to net a brilliant first half strike past Edwin van der Sar. The Scots held on for an unlikely Euro 2004 play-off first leg win.

5. SCOTLAND 1 FRANCE 0 (2006)

Walter Smith’s side were given no chance against the World Cup runners-up and had to defend for their lives for most of the match. But they held on and Gary Caldwell stabbed home from a corner to leave the Hampden crowd delirious.
