Scotland hero Jones set to quit Glasgow

EXCLUSIVE

- By ROB ROBERTSON

SCOTLAND centre Huw Jones is set to become the latest high-profile player to leave Glasgow Warriors after agreeing a deal to join Leicester Tigers. Although he has yet to put pen to paper, Jones is poised to sign a two-year deal with the Welford Road club. Losing him so soon after Stuart Hogg revealed that he is to join Exeter Chiefs after the 2019 World Cup is another massive blow to Warriors head coach Dave Rennie. Jones, who joined the Scotstoun club less than two years ago, turned down a deal in the region of £375,000 a year to stay in favour of a move to England. That would have made him the highest-paid player at the Warriors next season but

Sportsmail understands the Tigers have offered him even more. How much is not known. Edinburgh-born Jones enhanced his reputation with his role in setting up Peter Horne for a try against South Africa at the weekend which was one of the best ever seen at Murrayfield. Glasgow are likely to have centres Horne, Alex Dunbar and Nick Grigg at the club next season, so there is no shortage of quality players in that position. However, Jones brought a cutting edge to their midfield that will be missed. He had yet to fulfil his full potential, mostly due to injury, and losing him will be a massive disappointment to the club and its fans. Rennie, meanwhile, remains confident heading into Glasgow’s Guinness Pro14 clash against Cardiff Blues at Scotstoun on Friday night, despite still having more than 20 players away on Scotland duty. ‘It’s easy to complain but we want as many guys playing for Scotland as we can,’ said Rennie. ‘That’s helping us create good depth and learn more about a number of these young fellows who have fronted really well. That bodes well for the future. ‘Our performance against Munster and Ospreys without a number of players was top notch. ‘We didn’t get a result in Munster but we should have. I’m looking forward to the Cardiff game.’
