All yours for £100k, the Diana dress once sold for just £200
A DRESS that belonged to Princess Diana is being sold for £100,000 – 24 years after it was bought for £200 in a secondhand shop.
The ivory silk David Emanuel gown, pictured, was worn on a state visit to Bahrain in 1 86.
It was donated to a shop in Hereford by the housekeeper of Diana’s close friend Caroline Twiston-Davies.
A shop assistant bought it in 1 4 intending to wear it to a hunt ball. But she did not go and the dress remained in her wardrobe.
It was only recently that she realised its importance when she saw a documentary of Diana wearing it in the Gulf.
It will now be sold by Kerry Taylor Auctions of Bermondsey, South-east London, on December 10, with an estimate of £80,000 to £100,000.
One of Diana’s blazers, donated to the same shop, is also in the sale. The 1 80s Chelsea Design Company jacket is expected to fetch only £3,500 because it has slight damage.
Auctioneer Kerry Taylor said there remains a huge market for anything relating to Diana.
She added: ‘Although there are millions of Princess Diana fans, there are relatively few people with the funds to afford a gown like this.
‘However, it is a very important dress and we expect fierce bidding on the day. The dress is in perfect condition and is a unique one-off piece.’
The gown was specifically designed to cover as much of her body as possible in a bid to conform with local customs in the Gulf States.
There is a large bow behind the left shoulder and jewels encrusted along the sleeves and top half of the dress.
Prince Philip’s customised two-year-old Range Rover is for sale on AutoTrader at £12 ,850, even though a new one costs £105,080. He drove the Queen in it in 2016.
