Killie on top of the world with Clarke
KILMARNOCK... 2 LIVINGSTON ...... 0
THE miracle of Rugby Park continued last night as Steve Clarke took his Kilmarnock side to the top of the league. After a pulsating evening of Scottish football, with Celtic and Rangers both dropping points, it was Kilmarnock who took full advantage as their routine 2-0 win over Livingston took them to the summit of the Premiership. Clarke’s transformation of the Ayrshire club has been nothing short of stunning — taking them from the bottom of the league to the top in the space of a calendar year. A first-half
double from Greg Stewart, who has seen his career given a new lease of life under Clarke, had the Kilmarnock faithful in dreamland. The question now is where it will all end? Clarke undoubtedly will be desperate to keep expectations under control. But, as Livvy boss Gary Holt told
Sportsmail on the eve of last night’s game, the real conundrum is how long Killie can keep hold of their miracleworking manager. ‘Topping the table doesn’t mean anything does it? It’s only December,’ said Clarke. ‘Nice for the supporters, they can go to their work tomorrow happy. For us, it’s back to business tomorrow for a nice easy one on Saturday at Celtic Park. ‘It wasn’t a classic, so I’ll probably go home and watch the Motherwell-Celtic game instead and have an early look before the weekend — the life of a football manager, eh!’ On goal scorer Stewart, Clarke added: ‘He’s a top player and been really good for us since he came here. That little link between midfield and the forwards and scored a few goals as well and shows a good partnership with (Eamonn) Brophy. ‘He probably took a gamble coming back to Scottish football but, if works out well for Greg and works out well for Kilmarnock, everyone can be happy.’
