Justice chiefs’ plot to remove Trump
US JUSTICE chiefs were so alarmed by Donald Trump that they discussed removing him from office, the FBI’s former deputy director has revealed.
In an interview set to air on Sunday, Andrew McCabe says Mr Trump’s sacking of FBI chief James Comey in May 2017 sparked panic among senior law enforcement officials.
According to the interviewer who spoke to Mr McCabe, Justice Department bosses considered whether they should enlist the help of Trump cabinet members, including vice president Mike Pence, in invoking the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution.
The controversial amendment allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit for office.
Prior to Mr Comey’s sacking, Mr Trump had been critical of the FBI chief’s handling of an investigation into links between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia. The amendment to remove Mr Trump would have required the support of the vice president, a majority of the cabinet and two thirds of Congress to be triggered. It would have put Mr Pence in charge.
CBS interviewer Scott Pelley says Mr McCabe, who was also sacked by Mr Trump and is now promoting a book, told him about the plot to invoke the amendment.
‘There were meetings at the Justice Department in which it was discussed [removing] the President,’ Mr Pelley said.
He added: ‘They were not asking cabinet members whether they would vote for or against removing the President, but they were speculating “This person would be with us, this person would not be”.’
Mr Trump fired back at Mr McCabe on Twitter yesterday, saying: ‘Disgraced FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe pretends to be a “poor little Angel” when in fact he was a big part of the … Russia Hoax.’
