THE GOOD — Feb 5, 2005 France 16 Scotland 9
The one that got away. Scotland were 9-0 up early in the second half and should have gone at least 14-6 up, had Ally Hogg’s famous try been allowed to stand. Instead, Matt Williams’ boys lost thanks to a late equalising drop goal — and even later try from the escapology-loving hosts.
THE BAD — Mar 17, 2007 France 46 Scotland 19
Not actually the heaviest defeat, in terms of points gap. But this one felt horrible because the French were effectively engaged in a run chase to clinch the Six Nations title — and appeared able to score at will, ending the match with six tries to the Scots’ three.
The Ugly — Feb 12, 2017 France 22 Scotland 16
A brave performance from the Scots, who at least got a losing bonus point. But the ugliness? Four players lost to injury — Greig Laidlaw, Fraser Brown, John Barclay and the man who replaced Barclay, John Hardie — and a few others playing on when they really shouldn’t have.
