DATELINE OF A DISASTER...
July 4, 2017 Stade Josy Barthel, Luxembourg — Europa League first qualifying round, second leg PROGRES NIEDERKORN 2 RANGERS 0 (Progres win 2-1 on aggregate)
THE TEAMS
Progres: Flauss, O Thill, Ferino, Schneider, Watzka, S Thill, Lafon, Karapetyan, Francoise, Matias Marques, Karayer.
Manager: Thomas Gilgemann Rangers: Foderingham, Tavernier, Cardoso, Wallace, Bates, Rossiter, Kranjcar, Candeias, Jack, Morelos, Miller. Manager: Pedro Caixinha
THE GOALS
1-0: Emmanuel Françoise (66 mins) A corner is only partially cleared by Rangers. The ball falls to Olivier Thill, who darts into the box and fires a cross towards the six-yard box where Francoise hammers home on the volley to cancel out Kenny Miller’s goal from the first leg at Ibrox. 2-0: Sebastien Thill (75 mins) Rangers concede a free-kick in a dangerous position on the right flank. Sebastien Thill’s curling left-footed delivery beats Wes Foderingham, whose sight is obstructed by players from both teams. Cue pandemonium as Caixinha’s side are eliminated by the minnows in one of the worst results in their history.
THE AFTERMATH
Rangers supporters were enraged by defeat to a team who had never won a game in European competition before. The sight of Pedro Caixinha (right) trying to appease fans while standing in a bush has gone down in Scottish football folklore. The Portuguese never recovered from the shame and was sacked in October that year after a 1-1 draw at home to bottom club Kilmarnock.
