Honest Man Moffat wants to keep century talk quiet
MICHAEL MOFFAT insists he does not want to talk about homing in on a century of goals with Ayr United. But if the 34-year-old striker, now in his seventh season at Somerset Park over two spells, carries on this campaign the way he has started it, that topic of conversation will become unavoidable. Moffat sent Ayr on the road to victory with his fourth goal of the season, taking his tally to 95. Luke McCowan and Alan Forrest then had the hosts cruising at 3-0 before two goals in six minutes from Reghan Tumilty and Nicky Cadden got Morton to within one. A sublime lob from substitute Craig McGuffie on the full-time whistle finally calmed home nerves. Moffat, who provided much of the ammunition for the departed Lawrence Shankland’s 64 goals in two seasons, is now playing the main striker role and loving every minute. ‘I’m on 95 goals but don’t want to talk about it too much as 100 gets closer,’ he said. ‘But it would be a great achievement. I’ve started well and, hopefully, can keep it up and get on the end of a few chances. ‘We enjoyed the performance but the disappointing thing was the game looks a bit closer than it was. If we had scored seven or eight, I don’t think Morton could have complained.’ Moffat insists Ayr aren’t fazed by those who have written them off after last season’s heroics which saw them lead the league by five points before fading in the play-offs. ‘Everyone’s tipping us to finish seventh or eighth,’ he said. ‘We’ll keep it to ourselves what we hope we can achieve.’ Morton boss David Hopkin admitted: ‘We need to start games better and stop conceding goals that leave us chasing.’
