10 TO WATCH THIS SEASON

-

1 MASON MOUNT CHELSEA AGE: 20 PL APPS: 0

SPENDING another season learning from Frank Lampard — one of the greatest midfielders to grace the game — will be huge for Mount. He thrived on loan at Derby in the Championship and has continued to show his potential in pre-season. Chelsea cannot make any signings because of their ban but Mount stood out in their friendlies, used at No 10 or wide in a midfield diamond. He has that yard of pace and likes to score. Everything is in place for him to go far and when he does get the nod he can have that impact.

2 DELE ALLI SPURS AGE: 23 PL APPS: 131 GOALS: 42

THE midfielder (below) scored 18 Premier League goals in 2016-17, nine in 2017-18 and just five in 2018-19. Sorry Dele, but you’re simply too good to score only five times in 25 games. Hamstring issues did not help but I also think he has lost that notorious nasty streak. He needs to get that back. I want to see that anger again — that devilment we saw in his early days at Spurs. It got him in trouble occasionally but he’s a better player when playing on the edge. Last season it felt like he was the hunted rather than the hunter.

3 NICOLAS PEPE ARSENAL AGE: 24 PL APPS: 0

THIS is a signing that adds stardust to Arsenal. The Gunners have got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, who scored 35 top-flight goals between them in 2018-19. yet Arsenal finished the season with 467 shots — the 11th highest in the Premier League. The other Big Six clubs plus Leicester, Everton, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Wolves had more attempts on goal. So it wasn’t only in defence where Unai Emery’s side were falling short. Pepe (right), a £72m club-record buy from Lille, can add X-factor. He is an exciting signing and Arsenal are a team to watch this year.

4 FELIPE ANDERSON WEST HAM; AGE: 26 PL APPS: 36 GOALS: 9

My spies at West Ham have raved about Anderson’s pre-season performances. Those who work with him day in, day out say he is in red-hot form. The Brazilian is a superstar in waiting and I expect we’ll see that side of him this season. After losing Marko Arnautovic to the Chinese Super League, West Ham have a void to fill in attack. They have signed Sebastien Haller for £45m but I also think Anderson, who cost £36m when he joined from Lazio last summer, is capable of reaching that next level. Sorry West Ham fans, but I think we’ll see Anderson enjoy a stand-out season and that big clubs will come calling with £60m-plus bids next summer.

5 CHE ADAMS SOUTHAMPTON AGE: 23 PL APPS: 0

ADAMS was at Birmingham when my dad, Harry, was manager and I’m expecting him to prove that he is ready for the Premier League. There are so many players in the Championship crying out for that chance. Adams got his after Southampton snapped him up for £15m, and I think that will turn out to be a good bit of business. Defenders will hate playing against this guy. He is powerful, hangs on shoulders and runs well with the ball. He scored 22 in 46 games for Birmingham in the Championship last season. Adams will now look to make himself horrible to face in the Premier League and help Southampton progress under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

6 JAMES MADDISON LEICESTER; AGE: 22 PL APPS: 36 GOALS: 7

THE England team is crying out for players who can receive the ball on the half-turn then weave their magic. This midfield playmaker could do that for Gareth Southgate, and I hope he has a big season. He’s fortunate to have a boss like Brendan Rodgers at Leicester who will encourage him to express himself. Last season nobody created more chances than Maddison’s 100 in the Premier League and he scored some beautiful goals with that wicked right foot. I’d like to see him get those numbers up this time by scoring a few ugly ones too.

7 RHIAN BREWSTER LIVERPOOL AGE: 19 PL APPS: 0

I SUSPECT the reason why Liverpool have not spent big on cover for Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino is because Jurgen Klopp rates this boy so highly. You will remember Brewster from England’s Under 17 World Cup triumph in 2017, when he won the Golden Boot with eight goals. His injuries last season were devastating but this natural finisher is now back fit and raring to go. Brewster may only start a few games for Liverpool but the 19-year-old forward is guaranteed to get opportunities. Klopp admitted as much last month when he said: ‘I have told him already that he has an important role this year — but how important depends on him.’

8 JACK GREALISH ASTON VILLA AGE: 23 PL APPS: 34 GOALS: 1

I LOOK at Grealish and get the feeling that he could be the man to lead Aston Villa to safety this season. The midfielder was once seen as a bit of a rascal but he looks to have grown up. He’s become Villa’s talisman and the captain’s armband suits him. He’s a great dribbler and some of his strikes are wonder-goals. Grealish has not appeared in the Premier League since 2016 but he now looks ready to shine at this level. Villa’s first fixture sees them travel to Tottenham, the club that tried to sign Grealish previously. That’s hardly a bad stadium to welcome him — and Villa — back to the big time, and they will want to get off to a good start.

9 PHIL FODEN MAN CITY AGE: 19 PL APPS: 18 GOALS: 1

THOSE of you with good memories might recall how I tipped Foden as one to watch this time last year. I mentioned that he would find it difficult to displace Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva at City and that proved to be the case as he made just 13 league appearances. Foden still played his part, scoring a vital goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham that maintained their winning streak en route to the title. I want to see more of him this season and believe we will. I’m hoping this will be a breakthrough year because he looks ready to make that step up. I’m a massive fan, so let’s see how Pep Guardiola uses him.

10 MAX AARONS NORWICH AGE: 19 PL APPS: 0

ENGLAND are blessed with options at right back, from Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Kyle Walker to Trent Alexander-Arnold to Kieran Trippier. But keep an eye on this boy too. He was named in the Championship Team of the year last season and won the EFL young Player of the Season award. He will get game time under Daniel Farke, whose faith in him was rewarded last year. Norwich were quick to tie Aarons to a new five-year deal as they noticed his worth. He was linked with Manchester United but they spent £50m on Wan-Bissaka instead. Let’s see how Aarons progresses now he’s in the big league.
