CLASSICAL CONCERT BBC Proms 2019, 7.30pm, BBC Four

IN The Jungle Book, Bandar-log is Hindi for a group of monkeys — it’s also the name of the opener to this concert, which transports us to the forest. Also on the sheet of conductor Simon Rattle (pictured) tonight are the percussive Ameriques and soaring choral piece Belshazzar’s Feast.

‘THEY were much more Hollywood than they were Detroit,’ observes one contributo­r about the look of Diana Ross and The Supremes in the first of a new run of informativ­e profiles. It’s also the first of a double bill, the second of which focuses on soft rockers Chicago (8.30pm).

BIOPIC Leslie Caron: The Reluctant Star, 9pm, PBS America

‘I HAVE a great deal of trouble imagining myself as an old lady,’ reflects the glamorous French-born Gigi star, who talks candidly about her career in this new profile. She made her film debut in An American In Paris in 1951, which she didn’t like — Caron didn’t speak English, and had to repeat the lines given to her by her co-star Gene Kelly.

U.S. DRAMA Perception, 9pm, 5USA

‘REPLACEMEN­TS’ is the theme of tonight’s neatly packaged new episode, and the case pushes into imaginativ­e territory about what those who can’t have children will do to fill the gap. Dr Pierce (Eric McCormack) thinks he understand­s what’s going on, until the investigat­ion takes a bewilderin­g twist halfway through.

POP HISTORY Smashing Hits!, 9pm, BBC4

GARY KEMP reflects on the rise of the New Romantics in part one of this series, which begins in London, and has some good anecdotes. Clare Grogan recalls how Spandau Ballet (pictured) and Altered Images used to play each other at five-a-side football in Glasgow, along with ‘whoever else was touring’.

CULT FILM Quadrophen­ia, 11.20pm, Film4

This cult British drama — loosely inspired by The Who’s 1973 rock opera album — pits mods against rockers, with Phil Daniels going to Brighton for a seaside showdown. Although 40 years old, Franc Roddam’s classic still feels fresh and raw. Leslie Ash, Phil Davis and Sting are among the support cast.

ROMANTIC FANTASY Chocolat, 12.05am, ITV3

CHOCOLATE tastes delicious, but did you know it can be utterly transforma­tive? That’s the idea explored in Lasse Hallstrom’s adaptation of Joanne Harris’s dreamy novel. Juliette Binoche stars as the confection­er who stirs up a sleepy French town when she opens a chocolater­ie with her daughter.
