Trout of order! Instagram censors fishmonger’s snaps
A CELEBRITY fishmonger who shared film and photos of fresh catches on social media was stunned to find the images censored as ‘disturbing’.
Rex Goldsmith, whose customers include TV cook Nigella Lawson and cricket commentator Henry Blofeld, was confused when his Instagram page had the message: ‘This video contains sensitive content that many may find offensive or disturbing.’
Images of fish were blurred out and visitors to the page had to click on picture frames to see them.
Mr Goldsmith, who owns The Chelsea Fishmonger in London, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I think it’s a bit ridiculous. I don’t know whether the post has been reported by vegans or whether Instagram censored it. I have no idea why a vegan would follow a fishmonger on social media in the first place.
‘If they’re going to pick on me, why don’t they pick on one of the big companies who use the methods of farming that are bad for the environment and fish welfare?’ He suggested that if the censorship continues, the food community could stop using the social media platform.
Instagram has previously caused controversy by censoring pictures of meat products, including labelling images of pigs’ ears and trotters as ‘sensitive’.
The Vegan Society told the Telegraph: ‘Vegans are unlikely to follow the account of a fishmonger.’
Instagram said: ‘This content was marked as sensitive in error and has now been reinstated. We apologise for the mistake.’
