BEST IS YET TO COME FROM US, INSISTS AYR STAR ROSCOE

- GEORGE GRANT reports from Indodrill Stadium

IAN McCALL ultimately went out on a high with this comprehensive victory in his final game in charge of Ayr United. He described their efforts afterwards as ‘scintillating’, the best first-half of football any team of his has played in 20 years of management. Although the end of his four-year tenure at Somerset Park will undoubtedly hurt the Honest Men, defender Sam Roscoe believes they have the personnel to carry on punching above their weight in the Championship this season. Fresh from bringing Dundee United down a peg or two seven days previously, Ayr simply swept Alloa aside in the first half. An Alan Forrest double bookended goals from Roscoe and Luke McCowan in a magnificent display of attacking movement, verve and finishing. ‘The first half, it was clear to see,’ said Roscoe. ‘Some of the football we played at the top end of the pitch was unbelievable — the one touch, the two touch. ‘It could have been even more than four because we had a few chances. ‘It was brilliant to watch from the back. The four or five boys at the top end of the pitch, some of the stuff when they are on form is unbelievable. They will hurt any team in this league. ‘We started brilliantly last season and we are doing the same. We’ll let people talk about the two Dundee teams and Inverness — and we will just do our own business on a Saturday.’ Forrest swept in from the spot after Jamie MacDonald had bundled over Michael Moffat in the box just nine minutes in. The on-loan Kilmarnock keeper suffered another error of judgment three minutes later when he flapped at a corner to allow Roscoe to nod in from close range. ‘It’s the first league goal of my career and it’s good for me to finally get that,’ said the former Aberdeen defender. ‘I had a good season on loan at Alloa last year. It’s a great club, which is run brilliantly, but I am at Ayr United now and want to score in every game I can. ‘I want to help the team to get three points and that is what we did.’ Only a last-gasp double from former Ayr favourite Lawrence Shankland for Dundee United against Arbroath prevented them from taking top spot in the Championship. ‘It’s what Shankland does, isn’t it? He will score goals,’ said Roscoe. ‘We have to keep up with them because we want to be top. ‘Obviously, if we keep winning, then sooner or later they will drop points. ‘We go into every game wanting three points and we can take three points if we play like that again.’ It threatened to be an even worse afternoon for Alloa, with on-loan Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly also hitting the bar with a free-kick before Kevin O’Hara bundled in a consolation goal after an hour. ‘It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, you have to compete,’ said Alloa manager Peter Grant. ‘We know we’re a good football side but you have to compete ‘The first ten minutes were okay but the roof caved in on us and it was damage limitation in the end.’
