I’ll put Union Flag all over Scotland, declares Johnson

- By Political Editor

BORIS Johnson has vowed to plaster the Union Flag across everything the UK Government does in Scotland.

The Prime Minister last night told a Scottish Conservative reception he would put the flag on every investment the UK Government makes north of the Border.

He said it would feature prominently around a United Nations summit in Glasgow at the end of next year – and vowed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would not be allowed anywhere near it.

In a further signal that he is preparing a new offensive against the Scottish Government, Mr Johnson declared: ‘What we are going to do is we make sure that every policy we pursue, every investment we make in Scotland, we will put a Union Flag on it.

‘Whether that is the Type 26 frigates that are being built in Govan, which is providing long-term prosperity, fantastic high-quality jobs for young people in the Glasgow area, whether it is investing in defence or... for instance, the COP26 climate change summit, which is going to be held next year, it is going to be a great global summit where the leaders of the entire world will come to Glasgow.

‘I don’t mind seeing a Saltire or two, but I want to see the Union Flag – and I don’t want to see Nicola Sturgeon anywhere near it. The Scottish Nationalist (sic) Party didn’t secure that summit in London, it was the United Kingdom Government.’

He called on delegates to ‘expose the frauds of the SNP... for the failures that they are and, by the way, when we have got Brexit done, let’s remind them of the sheer incoherence of their policies.

‘Do they want to rejoin the European Union, pay into the EU budget, join the euro, submit to every jot and tickle of EU law?’

Appearing at the same reception, Scottish Tory leader Jackson Carlaw said his party would ‘bury the SNP’, described the Scottish Greens as ‘a burst of green flatulence’ and said Jo Swinson was a ‘pound shop Mary Poppins’.

A spokesman for Miss Sturgeon said: ‘People will be deeply embarrassed to hear their Prime Minister acting so childishly.

‘When it comes to issues of common concern such as climate change, the SNP Government are proud to play our part and work in partnership with other governments – something that Boris Johnson seems completely incapable of doing.’
