Schoolgirl, 15, nearly died smoking drugs in break

- By Amelia Clarke

A SCHOOLGIRL was left fighting for her life after smoking drugs with friends during break time.

Paramedics battled to save the 15year-old after she collapsed from a severe reaction to the unknown substance.

The student from Johnstone High School, Renfrewshire, vomited before falling unconscious with her lips turning blue. The incident happened on Wednesday morning in Beith Road, near the school.

Medics at first feared the teenager had overdosed on heroin. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in Glasgow, where she recovered.

Police said a 16-year-old boy has been charged. Inspector Jim Cast told the Paisley Daily Express: ‘The girl involved in this case is lucky to be alive. Had it not been for the ambulance crew there is a very good chance she may have lost her life.

‘Serious incidents like this serve to highlight the dangers of taking illegal substances. The message is simple: taking drugs could cost you your life.’

Officers said they were working with schools in the area to prevent similar incidents. Inspector Cast added: ‘I’d also ask young people to report any drug-related activity in or around their schools.’

A Renfrewshire council spokesman said: ‘Our primary concern is for the health and well-being of the pupil.

‘Thankfully she has now recovered and school staff will continue to support her on her return.’

A police spokesman said the 16-year-old boy had been charged with alleged drugs supply offences and was expected to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court later this month.
