MPs’ children ‘scared’ by Brexit protesters’ vitriol
DAILY Mail columnist Sarah Vine spoke out yesterday to reveal her children had been ‘scared’ by Remainer abuse aimed at their father Michael Gove.
Discussing the vitriol faced by Jacob Rees-Mogg and his 12-year-old son as they left Westminster on Saturday, Miss Vine told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: ‘For the son it must have been a frightening experience to be surrounded by that.
‘I have children as well. Occasionally, we do get aggression in the street and it’s quite scary for them.
‘He should be able to take his son to Parliament if he wants to and it should be okay for him to come out without being shouted at.’
She added: ‘The thing about politicians is no one really feels any sympathy for them and to a certain extent you have to suck it up. This is just what happens if you are in politics in Britain today. The police were amazing. Thank God it’s not more violent than that.’
Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom said she received abuse from antiBrexit protesters shortly after MPs voted to delay a vote on Boris Johnson’s deal. Hundreds of thousands of protesters were gathered in London to call for a second referendum.
Footage on social media showed Mrs Leadsom being heckled with ‘shame on you’ by People’s Vote demonstrators as she left the Houses of Parliament under police escort. Activists were also heard shouting ‘shame’ as Mr Rees-Mogg and his son, Peter, passed on London’s Millbank, while police could be heard urging people to leave Mr Gove alone.
Mrs Leadsom later tweeted: ‘Why do the so-called People’s Vote protesters think it’s OK to abuse, intimidate and scream in the face of someone they don’t agree with? So frightening, and so grateful to the police.’
