Blind subway fall man faces a year in hospital

- By Paul Rodger and Jack Aitchison

A BLIND man whose guide dog led him onto subway tracks faces a year in hospital.

Christopher McCarrol, 32, was left fighting for his life after the horrific incident at Bridge Street Station in Glasgow on October 3.

Witnesses said he was ‘covered in blood’ and ‘missing half his ear’ after the fall.

His family have now disclosed that he has ‘defied the odds’ to survive the incident, but faces years of rehabilitation after suffering terrible injuries.

They also posted pictures of Mr McCarrol hooked up to lifesaving equipment in hospital.

The Glasgow Subway was closed while police investigated the accident, with services delayed for around four hours.

Mr McCarrol was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with ‘life-threatening’ injuries. Witnesses initially claimed his golden labrador, Inca, had fallen too, but a British Transport Police spokesman said the dog was not on the tracks when officers arrived.

Mr McCarrol’s family say he remains in intensive care almost a month after the accident. In a statement on a GoFundMe page created on Thursday, the family wrote: ‘No one expected Chris to live but he has defied the odds.

‘Due to the severity of his injuries, Chris is expected to stay in hospital for a year. His recovery will take at least two years.’

By last night the page had raised £4,080, with a target of £25,000 set by the family.
