NOVEMBER 5, 1966 The new Doctor Who makes his debut in the BBC TV series tonight. Out goes 58year-old William hartnell, who has played the ‘900-year-old’ doctor for three years. In comes 46-year-old former Shakespearean actor Patrick Troughton. The change-over will be explained by saying the Doctor has been made a few hundred years younger.
NOVEMBER 5, 1992 TELEGRAMS of congratulations [concerning the u.S. presidential election] from world leaders poured into Bill Clinton’s headquarters yesterday. But in Iraq there was jubilation at the defeat of george W. Bush. Saddam hussein fired his gun in the air and declared: ‘The dictator fell long ago when he decided to bomb Baghdad.’

TILDA SWINTON, 59. The actress attended West heath boarding school with Princess Diana. In the 2018 film Suspiria, she wore prosthetics to play an 82year-old man. Asked why she took the role, Swinton (pictured) said: ‘As my grandmother would have it — a motto to live and die by — “Dull not To”.’
ART GARFUNKEL, 78. The u.S. singersongwriter, winner of eight grammy awards, made his name with Paul Simon as one half of Simon & garfunkel. he is an avid reader, once devouring the entire Random house Dictionary, ‘all 1,664 pages, it took me a couple of years’. he recalled: ‘I collected words . . . words that are lovelysounding shells on the beach.’
BORN ON THIS DAY
IKE TURNER (19312007). With wife Tina, Turner had hits including River Deep Mountain high and Proud Mary. he abused her throughout their marriage and she revealed last year that he forced her to watch a live sex show on their wedding night. The couple (pictured in the early 1960s) were inducted together into the Rock & Roll hall of fame in 1991 — while Ike was in prison following a drugs conviction.
SAM SHEPARD (1943-2017). The u.S. actor starred in films including Black hawk Down and The Pelican Brief. he had affairs with musicians Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith and two children with actress Jessica lange. Shephard won a Pulitzer Prize for his play Buried Child about a dysfunctional family with a hard-drinking father. his own alcoholic father once came to a performance drunk and heckled the cast.
