Peters caught in the middle

- By MIKE KEEGAN

STEVE PETERS described Richard Freeman as a liar yesterday during the medical tribunal that has rocked cycling. The highly-regarded former head of medicine at Team Sky cast doubts on the claims of former colleague Freeman, who admits he had 30 sachets of Testogel (testosterone) delivered to Manchester Velodrome in 2011 but said they were for former coach Shane Sutton and not a rider. The psychiatrist, called by the General Medical Council (GMC) as a witness, said he was duped by Freeman into giving a misleading press interview about the sachets. Asked whether Freeman or Sutton, who denies the banned substance was for him, was telling the truth, Peters said: ‘All I am saying is I have a man who has lied to me (Freeman), another guy who is untrustworthy (Sutton). I feel like I am being asked to solve the crime.’ On Tuesday, former head coach Sutton stormed out of the hearing after telling Freeman to come out from behind a screen and look him in the eye. Freeman was absent yesterday and his QC Mary O’Rourke said: ‘Unfortunately, Dr Freeman had an adverse reaction to what happened on Tuesday. Dr Freeman is not in a fit condition to be here.’ He was due to see a psychiatrist today. Freeman claims that Sutton bullied him into ordering the drug and Peters said the coach’s aggressive behaviour was well known, adding: ‘Richard and Phil (Burt) found it very hard to stand up to that, as did many of the athletes.’ Team physio Burt, who took delivery of the package and raised the alarm, is due to give evidence today.
