Revealed, the worst day of the year for weather (and it’s almost here!)

- By Annie Butterworth

Batten down the hatches – thursday is set to be the worst weather day of the year.

Researchers have trawled through 30 years of data to discover that December 19 is by far the most atrocious day of cold, rain and wind.

the researchers also found the ‘perfect’ conditions Scots look forward to are most likely found on July 18.

to calculate the dates when ideal weather was most likely to occur, 2,000 people were questioned on the temperature and weather conditions they consider to be the most comfortable.

these optimum conditions were compared against weather forecasts in each city over the past 30 years to find out when they were most likely to occur. Of all the cities studied, edinburgh and Glasgow preferred their weather coolest, choosing 20C as their ideal temperature, while people in London opted for a reading of 23C.

July 18 was named the best day for weather in the Scots cities.

a spokesman for andrews Sykes Heater Hire, which commissioned the research with weather analyst Dtn, said: ‘Dtn’s massive set of legacy weather data allowed us to pinpoint these days in some of the UK’s major cities – days which we hope Brits are marking in their calendars as sure-fire good weather days.’

It also emerged the average Briton will talk about the weather four times a day. a third use the topic to break the ice with a stranger and one in five find meteorological discussions interesting.

and 46 per cent of people speak about the weather simply because ‘it’s the British thing to do’.

the ideal weather for Britons consists of a light breeze and mild temperatures of 22C.

▪ Winds are set to reach speeds of up to 70mph tomorrow in western parts with what could be named Storm Brendan, depending on the disruption caused. Up to an inch of rain could fall. a weather warning has been issued for 2pm tomorrow to 3am on thursday for South-West Scotland.
