FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE SPFL THIS WEEKEND
KENT DELIVERS SOME DERBY DELIGHT
WHY did Rangers pay £7million for Ryan Kent? Yesterday provided the answer. The winger produced an excellent display in helping Rangers secure a 2-1 win at Parkhead. Kent’s instinctive finish to break the deadlock was classy. He showcased his passing touch, finishing ability, raw speed and unrelenting energy in a stellar showing on the biggest of occasions.
ABERDEEN HIT THE WALL ON THEIR TRAVELS
WITHOUT Sam Cosgrove, Aberdeen lack fluency in attack. The Dons miss the focal point and goals their star striker offers. Niall McGinn was able to rescue a 1-1 draw at Tynecastle from a set-piece but a point against ten-man Hearts, who are bottom of the league, is a poor result and extends the Dons’ run away from home without a win to four games.
REALITY CHECK FOR ROSS AT LIVINGSTON
HIBERNIAN boss Jack Ross may appreciate the size of the task he has at the Edinburgh club after being rolled over 2-0 at Livingston. Hibs’ soft centre was exposed again and Gary Holt’s side took full advantage. Ross (pictured) needs an enforcer in defensive midfield if they are to pick up points at difficult venues such as Livingston.
FINE MARGINS FALL AGAINST KILMARNOCK
LOSING each of your last four games of 2019 by a scoreline of 1-0 is hard to swallow for a Kilmarnock side stuck in transition. Winless in their last seven and failing to score in six of those fixtures, firing another blank against St Mirren in a one-goal loss yesterday is another confidence shredder for Killie to mull over. The next managerial appointment has to be the right one.
WASPS HAVE A STING IN THE TAIL
IT would be dangerous to write off part-time Alloa Athletic’s chances of surviving for a second straight season in the Championship. They fell behind to in-form Dunfermline but rallied to win 3-1. Results elsewhere mean Peter Grant’s side stay bottom of the table but Saturday was a reminder that the Wasps are capable of beating the drop.
